Just finished my first 24 hours shift in The Dungeon, that is, the gloomy underground emergency room of our local general hospital, but it might as well have been a decade or two due to the bombastic News that hit this morning. Not sure if you guys have read anything about it, but there’s a good chance this is the end of an era for Brazil in general, and na asshole in particular. Anyways, here’s a lean mean Nova, from a vintage ad probably.

Yup, the Petrobrás investigation has been going on for a while, and yesterday it finally got to the big cheese. Lula was arrested for questioning today, and 4 or 5 of his places of residence are being raided for evidence right now. He had evaded questioning once or twice already, but new evidence uncovered yesterday justified his arrest this morning. Some outlets are even reporting the cops moved in as he was preparing to flee the country.
Now, I know that many times over the last 13 years the image international media outlets made of Brazil was of a country in frank economic boom, with a Strong, unanimously beloved leader, but that was never the case, specially now that we’re running towards crushing depression and political turmoil.
Lula built himself a messianic myth in the last 13 years that might just come crashing down in the next few days.

I can only imagine how big the March 13 protests are going to be... They were planned months ago, way before all this shit hit the fan, but the organizers are using it to ask for na even greater public presence.

My wife is currently in a huge Brazil phase right now. She is into the pop music and the atmosphere of carnival and nightlife parties. She want to visit Rio and go out and experience Brazil’s party, dancing scene. Is it the utopia of song and dance like she sees and thinks?

Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about. None of the next outlets I've checked even have anything on Brazil.

Sadly... It isn’t. Right now, it’s more akin to the dystopia portrayed in the eponymous film, than the traditional “country of carnaval” image the government tries so hard to sell. It’s an interesting time for sure, but only for the social and political turmoil, and those are about to get even more intense.

Most of them wouldn’t, it’s still too early. Check out the BBC, it was on their front page earlier in the morning. The Financial Times just put out na article as well.

At least you wait until after they are elected president before sending them to jail. Americans might send Hillary Clinton to jail before she’s elected president; what’s the fun in that?

I just got through reading a couple of news stories about Lula and Rousseff. What a mess. But honestly, hasn’t this sort of thing been going on for many years? What happened to finally lower the boom on these people?
Also, who is bringing the charges? There are still people high up in Brazil who aren’t on the take?

I know right, there’s a protest scheduled for March 13, and it was planned months before all of this stuff happened. It was probably going to be pretty big before, but now it should get downright epic levels.

So, after the Olympics, things are going to get really tough huh?

Good question. Someone decided it’s time to bring down the house, and whatever appeals Lula and company were using to stay clear until now have been rejected. It’s still too early to say if anything good, or even if anything at all will come out of it, but one can hope, right...

It’s hard not to be cynical in such a situation. Is the criminal justice system going after these heavyweights for their own personal gain? Is this essentially a judicial coup d’etat? Or are the motives purely justice for the people? And what about the Olympics?

Honestly, There might not even be the Olympics after all, hahahha... I mean, we’re only a couple months off, and the government didn’t even manage to clean up the venues which would house the water sports, there’s this whole Zika and Dengue epidemics, violence is at an all time high, strikes and protests are daily occurrences nowadays and its not at all uncommon for groups of opposite political inclinations to meet up on the street and beat the hell out of each other.

are you serious? No, they don’t actually fight on the streets like that. Also, I knew there was crime but I doubt it’s worse than ever.

Good questions all... Might be the judges involved are thinking about their own careers, might be they figured people are just about fed up with this shit, might be they figured that if things keep going this way, there won’t be a Brazil in the future.
I don’t think it’s a coup though, not when both presidential figures spent so much time right in the middle of the countries’ largest corruption scheme. There’s just no way they didn’t knew or weren’t aware of what went on around them, and even if it’s true they can still be charged with criminal negligence.
Might be there’s even some relationship to the end of leftist clamors in South American countries, hell some people are already claiming the whole thing was orchestrated by the CIA.
As for the Olympics, that remains to be seen. It’s not much of a stretch to assume they could be called off after all that’s happened.

In a purely detached way, it’s fascinating to watch this play out. But clearly, with so much at stake for you and your country, it’s so much more than a purely intellectual exercise. As for the CIA, I think the first question to ask is, “What does the US gain by a change in Brazil’s government?” I’m no analyst, but I don’t see an immediately clear answer to that. Let’s hope this brings some measure of stability to Brazil. Lord knows the world is unstable enough as it is. Stay safe.

Well, not unprovoked no, but last time Lula was called to testify, fights broke out between organized groups who supported/opposed the worker’s party.
As for the crime rates, it might be more particular to my area, but all time high is putting it lightly. Just last month, my building was broken into 4 times, and one of my neighbors was gunned down right at the front door in a fifth attempt. Drug gangs are in all out war for territory, and some parts of town have curfews in place to prevent people from walking into shootouts. That’s how bad we’re doing right now.

Nah, the CIA argument is bullshit, Government supporters are clearly grabbing at straws right now. To be honest, I think there were Always some people interested in uncovering the whole scandal, but it takes forever because politicians get to pull strings and either buy them, demoralize them or put them out of comission. Dilma’s tried to replace Judge Moro 2 or 3 times already, since he’s the one leading the charges against her government, for example, but he’s kept at it anyways.

Thanks man, I’ll be. I just got off two months working as a phyisician in one of the worse communities here in Porto Algre and, while it was common to see gang members walking about with heavy weaponry, nothing bad happened, fortunately. I guess they still have a modicum of respect for the doctors and nurses working ta UPAs in their communities.

Well, they’re better now that I don’t have to drive up a favela on my way to work, hahaha... But yeah, unfortunately I’m pretty sure things will still get worse before they start to improve.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. I’ll be back to the favelas for another stint in April, but right now things are relatively calm, as calm as they can be at least.

Thanks man, I’m interning at na emergency hospital this month, so it’s a lot less tense than going to the favelas. We still see the damndest stuff though. Yesterday, a guy was brought by the cops with extensive facial trauma because he tried to mug a lady in a bus, and the other passengers got angry and he was beaten up by 15, 16 people. They broke his face, hands, fingers and knees pretty good.
That’s the perfect analogy for Brazil right now, though.
